We know Compaq makes a lot of great products, but the A4000 All-In-One does not reflect Compaq's best efforts. On the plus side, the A4000 is an affordable multifunction device. However, the print and scanning abilities of the A4000 leave something to be desired. The A4000 is a printer/scanner/copier/fax multifunction device that measures 7.75 inches high x 17.25 inches wide x 13 inches deep, so it's a compact unit. It has a maximum printer resolution of 2,400 x 1,200 and a scanner resolution of up to 9,600dpi. The fax resolution is 300 x 300, and the copier resolution is 600 x 600. The A4000 has a 100-sheet capacity input tray and can copy, scan, or fax as many as 30 sheets at a time. Our labs ran the usual battery of tests on the A4000, and I wasn't overly impressed with the results. The color quality of the scanned images could definitely have been better. The colors generally looked a little washed out, not nearly as vibrant as the colors in the original images. The A4000's printing abilities leave something to be desired, as well. It took the A4000 2:19 (minutes:seconds) to print 10 pages of text, which is pretty slow. The text was slightly fuzzy, but it wasn't especially noticeable. We printed a six-page text and graphics document next, which took 5:07. I noticed considerable banding in the colors of the charts and graphics, and the printer's color distinction wasn't very good either. The printer did better in the Photoshop test. Although it took 15:18 to print the test photo, it looked good. The image was sharp, and the color quality was much better than in our previous test. I'd be reluctant to recommend the A4000. Excessive banding and slow print jobs are not what you want from a multifunction device. by Michael Sweet A4000 All-In-One $249.99 Compaq (800) 888-0220 (281) 370-0670. www.compaq.com CPU Rating: 1.5 (out of 5)
