We've heard the story many times: You recently installed a nice, fat hard drive, but all that free space has dwindled away. Exactly what's eating up your storage space? BulletProof FolderSizes will tell you. The heart of the program is its graph, which details which directories and files use the most space on your hard drive or removable media. Clicking a folder lets you drill down to view a graph of the relative sizes of the directories it contains. You can find out, for example, which of your bulging MP3 directories are taking more than their fair share of space. The graphs are updated in real-time, allowing you to visualize the effect on disk space as you delete and move files. The utility can also print space reports or export them as text, HTML, and XML. The utility's file report generator can single out the largest and oldest files in a directory and point you to space-hogging duplicate files. The duplicate finder works based on file names and sizes (and optionally dates) but not content. If a file has outlived its usefulness, you can delete it with a click. If you can't bring yourself to delete stuff, you can free space by compressing some data. FolderSizes includes a smart FilterZip compression tool that can compress files with names matching the regular expressions you specify. Combined with date and file-size options, you can quickly compress image files of more than 500KB that haven't been accessed in the past month, for example. The program can also save the archive to another drive and delete the originals to free space. FolderSizes also works with other PCs on your LAN. That feature could make it a godsend for LAN administrators who can find out if a balky workstation is overloaded with MP3s or dirty pictures without even getting up. If your hard drive space is waning or you're just a file neat freak, BulletProof FolderSizes will help you keep your drive tidy with a minimum of fuss.
