Gearbox casts Rebirth (Rank 7) on Duke Nukem.
Over time, a few gaming postulates have been accepted into canon. Nintendo will produce a kajillion Mario titles for every console generation. Bobby Kotick is a jerk. And, of course, we must not fail to mention one of our most treasured maxims: Duke Nukem Forever will be released. The game has transcended mere vaporware status to become something like the Keyser Söze of videogames. At this year’s Penny Arcade Expo, we dare say that the myth may finally become a reality. 2K Games developer Gearbox Software had a playable demo on hand and announced that DNF will be released next year for the PS3, X360, and PC.

Google TV goes on air this fall.
Chief Bad Guy Eric Schmidt was on hand at Germany’s IFA consumer electronics expo to deliver the event’s keynote address. There, he revealed that Google will flip the switch on Google TV in the coming months (weeks?). Sony’s already committed to including the service on some of its sets, and it looks like Samsung many join the fold soon, too. Other Google TV partners include Dish Network, Intel, and Logitech.

The best of the worst, or just the worst?
As if you didn’t already spend enough time linking from clip to clip on YouTube, now there’s a site called Zero Views that compiles the YouTube fare that would otherwise languish in total obscurity. This brings up a number of interesting sociological questions, but the most obvious one is “Why?”. Either you’ll find diamonds in the rough, or you’ll find out why all this video has gone unwatched, and in either case, is this the online equivalent of rubbernecking at a roadside crash? Only one way to find out!

NASA to launch probe into the sun.
We’ll be the first to admit that we are hardly astrophysicists, but we were surprised to learn in this MSNBC.com piece that the sun’s atmosphere is 200 times hotter than its visible surface. In any event, NASA wants to know why and is sending a probe (“Solar Probe Plus”) to find out. The agency is currently accepting proposals for what sort of instruments should be included on this mission, so we thought we’d take the initiative and be the first to suggest Sean Penn and Wyclef Jean as captain and first officer.

Hurd lands on his feet.
Normally, we prefer to report on cutting-edge tech rather than the people behind that tech, especially when those people are otherwise unassuming business types like ex-HP CEO Mark Hurd. As you might know, Hurd was effectively chased out of HP over sexual harassment allegations. But Mark’s retirement didn’t last long, and believe it or not, his new job happens to be a bit better than Denny’s greeter: Hurd was named co-president of Oracle and will also have a seat on Oracle’s board of directors.
