The Gamer Xtreme XE line has traditionally been one of the top-tier builds from CyberPower, and the Gamer Xtreme XE-K sent to us was no exception. The boutique builder overclocked Intel’s hexa-core i7-980X up to 4GHz using a liquid-cooling setup that includes a 240mm radiator at the top of the case. And although many systems on our test bench have an occasional lockup during our rigorous testing process, we experienced no such issue with the Gamer Xtreme XE-K and its 20% CPU overclock. CyberPower chose to use a Cooler Master CM 690 II Advanced case, which offers open spaces at the top and bottom of the case for 240mm radiators. CyberPower smartly installed the 240mm radiator at the top of the case, where the mesh design allows for full ventilation of the hot air. A 240mm fan at the front of the case pulls outside air over the storage drives—an 80GB Intel X-25M and 1TB Hitachi CinemaStar—as well as the PowerColor Radeon HD 5870 graphics cards. We liked that CyberPower boxed up the graphics cards rather than installing them inside the system, where the weight of the cards can easily damage the motherboard or the cards themselves during shipping. In terms of design, CyberPower takes advantage of the multiple openings in the back of the motherboard tray and behind the power supply to route all the cables so that the connectors, not the cables, are nearly the only things you see when looking inside the case. There’s a blue LED in the fan at the front of the case; it’s the Gamer Xtreme XE-K’s only interior light. Although it may be short on flash, the Gamer Xtreme XE-K is big on connectivity. There’s a Lite-On 4X BD-ROM/8X DVD-ROM and a 22X DVD±RW as well as a 12-in-1 memory card reader on the front of the chassis. The Cooler Master CM 690 II also features an external SATA dock with a cover you can close. The Gamer Xtreme XE-K delivered solid benchmark scores, with a 29303 GPU score and 36699 CPU score in 3DMark Vantage. The system’s CrossFireX Radeon 5870s showed well with 51.5fps in Dirt 2 and 56.77fps in Far Cry 2 at 2,560 x 1,600. The results from SiSoftware Sandra’s 2010 Lite’s Memory Bandwidth (23.45GBps) and Physical Disks (233.88MBps) provide proof that the Gamer Xtreme XE-K delivers well-rounded performance. CyberPower’s skillful overclocking, which is free of charge, is the highlight of Gamer Xtreme XE-K. We also came away impressed with the cleanliness of the system interior, especially when you consider that the case houses two optical drives, two storage drives, two graphics cards, and a memory card reader. by Nathan Lake | Benchmark Numbers | Cyberpower Gamer Xtreme XE-K | | | | | 3DMark Vantage | | | Overall | 30857 | | GPU Score | 29303 | | GPU1 (fps) | 88.46 | | GPU2 (fps) | 83.11 | | CPU Score | 36699 | | CPU1 (Plans/s) | 5202.95 | | CPU2 (Steps/s) | 45.51 | | | | | PCMark Vantage Pro 1.0 | | | Overall | 20758 | | Memories | 12259 | | TV And Movies | 7001 | | Gaming | 23660 | | Music | 19279 | | Communications | 20096 | | Productivity | 24223 | | HDD | 29529 | | | | | SiSoft Sandra 2010 Lite | | | Processor Arithmetic | | | Dhrystone ALU (GIPS) | 175.65 | | Whetstone iSSE3 (GFLOPS) | 123.65 | | Processor Multi-Media | | | Integer x16 iSSE4.2 (Mpixels/s) | 324.12 | | Floating Point x8 iSSSE3 (Mpixels/s) | 242.00 | | Double x4 iSSE2 (Mpixles/s) | 131.28 | | Memory Bandwidth | | | Integer Buffered iSSE2 (GBps) | 23.45 | | Floating-Point Buffered iSSE2 (GBps) | 23.45 | | Physical Disks | | | Read Performance (MBps) | 233.88 | | | | | Cinebench 10 | | | Score | 32020 | | Time* | 0:26 | | | | | Cinebench 11.5 | | | CPU*** | 10.29 | | | | | POV-Ray 3.7 Beta** | 7687.06 | | | | | Dirt 2 (8X MSAA) | 51.5 | | | | | Far Cry 2 (8XAA) | 56.77 | | | | | S.T.A.L.K.E.R Call Of Pripyat | 34.1 | | | | | * minutes:seconds | | | ** pixels per second | | | *** points | |
