Anyone who's responsible for a mission-critical server or workstation knows that even the slightest bit of downtime is unacceptable. Diligent system admins surely have a backup strategy in place, but it takes time to restore a backup or retrieve a drive image from another partition. In the time it takes to reboot a system, Raxco's First Defense-ISR (Immediate System Recovery) can restore a drive to a functional state without decompressing or even copying a single file. First Defense-ISR installs like any other Windows application; it doesn't make any changes to the existing partition and doesn't need to reside on a different drive. Upon installation, a portion of the hard drive is set aside to store system Snapshots that you can load by simply selecting them from a boot menu. Should the existing OS installation become corrupt for any reason, for example, rebooting the system and selecting a working Snapshot is all that's necessary to bring the system back up. You can create Snapshots manually or schedule them to run at predetermined intervals. We'd suggest scheduling Snapshots for off-peak hours, however, as backing up our primary Snapshot took 30-plus minutes on a relatively clean Windows 2000 system. Although its name implies that First Defense-ISR is a system recovery tool, it's also very useful for maintaining multiple OS configurations. QA testers or those who experiment with beta drivers or applications will immediately see the value in this feature. Take a Snapshot after a clean OS install, another after applying a service pack, and yet another after installing your favorite applications. Switching among configurations to diagnose software incompatibilities or other annoying problems is now as simple as selecting the necessary Snapshot during a reboot. The only time you lose switching between configurations is the time it takes to reboot the system. First Defense-ISR is compatible with all desktop and server versions of Windows configured with NTFS partitions, including Windows Server 2003. A 14-day free trial is available. by Marco Chiappetta
